1963: A Legend Is Born
F.A. Porsche, son of company founder Ferry Porsche, spearheaded the design of the Porsche 911 to craft a fast, performance-driven sports car. It was unveiled in 1963 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show and received rave reviews. Porsche put the model into full production the following year, designed for racetracks, city streets, and in some variants, even a bit of off-roading.
1997: Water-Cooled Engines
The Porsche 911 was originally built with air-cooled engines, but in 1997, the manufacturer switched to water-cooled engines. This radical change was built out of necessity, as engine fans and cooling fins were becoming inefficient, whereas a water-cooled engine achieved better performance and lower emissions. The 1997 model year was the start, and it’s been the standard ever since.
2026: Faster and More Powerful
In recent years, the Porsche 911 has been outfitted with engines that achieve the highest power output of the model yet, including hybrid-assisted variants. The 2026 Porsche 911 Turbo S was outfitted with a 3.6-liter engine and electric motor. Combined, they generate a net 701 horsepower and achieve a top speed of 200 MPH.
